3D printers and 3D printing sound like something straight out of the pages of a sci-fi novel. You walk up to a machine, push a couple of buttons, and wait as it builds an exact replica of the thing you need. Whether it’s a cup or a hex wrench, a 3D printer can make nearly anything. How do 3D Printers work?

It isn’t magic though. In fact it’s actually pretty simple once you watch how the process works.

It’s Like A Stalactite In Fast-Forward

Remember in science class when the teacher explained how stalactites (the ones on the ceiling) form in caves? Water drips down, and when it drips it leaves a tiny bit of material behind. Over years and years these deposits build up, creating the massive stone teeth that adds to the impression cave divers are moving through a dragon skull.

3D printers work pretty much exactly like that, except a lot faster.

You begin with a 3D design that exists as a blueprint. You send the blueprint to the printer, and tell it to make you a copy of this thing. The printer, which is actually a nozzle, sprays out thin layers of plastic which dry into a single object. The result is that whatever it is you’re printing is built quite literally from the ground up.Product made with a 3D Printer

What Can I Make?

You can print anything you have a blueprint for, and which your printer is physically capable of making. For example there are huge 3D printers capable of printing out entire houses, but most 3D printers have a much smaller space to work with. Whether you need tiny plaques or small figures, a set of dice or a necessary tool you can’t wait on though you can make it quickly and easily with a 3D printer.
