When printing your bar code labels, it’s important to consider the color of the label, the color of the ribbon, and the color of the packaging you are printing the bar code on. These colors are not just important the looks of your packaging, especially in contrast with your packaging or collateral design, but also for the bar code’s readability. Scanners need a great contrast between light and dark bars, so if colors you pick–either for the ribbon or label–are not different enough, you might have problems getting a read of the code. Here’s a few tips that can help you make sure the color of your bar codes are coordinated for the best readability, and to avoid wasting time and money reprinting bar codes.barcode labels color

Colors That Work

The best and most typical color combination for bar code labels are black bar codes on white labels. Black on yellow labels, or black on red labels, are also visible to the scanner. But you can also print bar codes in blue, green or brown, as long as these color bar codes are contrasted against a white, yellow, or red label. These combinations allow for enough contrast for the scanner to read the bars without difficultly. If your packaging is white, yellow, or red, for example, you can then print bar codes directly on your packaging’s surface using a black, blue, green, or brown ink or ribbon.

Colors That Don’t Work

Because scanners typically use lasers to read bar codes, there are limits to how they can “see” the colors without mixing them up. For example, red bar codes on white, blue, green or brown backgrounds/labels, because red is typically read as white by a scanner. Therefore, a scanner would just see a blank white space if given a label with a red bar code on a white background. Other combinations that should not be used include yellow on white, red on green, or red on a blue label.

That’s why it’s important to be mindful of your bar code/label color combinations for your packaging.
