Up until now, all mobile printers used direct thermal paper only. This restricted the use of mobile printers to only be used for printing material that did not have to last too long or be very durable. Today there are many other options for mobile printing opening up many more applications. An example is the Zebra P4T Mobile Printer.

The P4T is the world’s very first thermal transfer printer that is mobile. Thermal transfer is a term used for printers that thermally transfer wax or resin from a ribbon onto a label. This process is more durable and permanent. This printer offers advanced wireless connectivity and boasts an array of features that easily handle customer’s printing needs while on the road.

So with all this information, what is an actual application we have used these printers for? This printer has been implemented in a national industrial distributor where they have hundreds of sales people in the field calling on parts warehouses, factories, repair shops, and maintenance rooms all over the country.

The original issue was that all of these sales people had sheets of labels they had to keep in the vehicle on sales calls in case some of the labels in the parts rooms were gone or worn out. The sales person makes their route and takes inventory by scanning the label and entering the reorder quantity. If the label is missing or damaged, a new labels must be made. The sales person would go to the vehicle and grab a sheet with many labels on the sheet. They then take the one label off of the sheet that needed to be replaced and discarded the rest of the sheet.

This process led to an extreme expense on the company due to all the wasted labels in the field. These labels were not just the basic paper label either. They were a high grade vinyl label with an over laminate to protect the image.

We proposed using mobile printers to allow printing on demand, but the mobile printers at the time only produced direct thermal labels which do not use a ribbon and they fade. Then along came the P4T, allowing thermal transfer printing on the road. For just over $1000.00 per unit, the printer more than paid for itself in discarded labels.

Each sales person now has a P4T printer in their vehicle. They can bring the printer into the tool crib, parts room, or manufacturing setting and as they see labels that need to be replaced, they call them up from the system memory and print the single label needed.

The trick to making the label quality match the quality of the sheets that the sales people used before is the use of a synthetic label that is matched exactly to the proper full resin ribbon. This is where our expertise comes in with the extensive testing and research making sure the durability is reliable and long lasting.

The testing is extensive and the label-ribbon combination is put through rub and scratch tests, along with multiple cleanser and chemical tests to make sure the resin imprint will not rub off. Different brands even react differently when applied to synthetic stock.

The sales representatives for this company went from carrying many categorized pages of label sheets each configured and pre-printed for specific parts cabinets, to a single roll of blank labels and a single roll of resin ribbon to print labels on demand as needed.

The cost savings were tremendous and the flexibility and turnaround time on the sale representative having the right label at the right time was completely eliminated.

The P4T Zebra mobile printer proves its value over and over with many more examples like this application in the field. Contact us with your challenging application and let us help cut your costs with innovative solutions like the Mobile P4T printer solution outlined in this review.

Is paint causing problems for your tracking application?

Today we have a permanent paint-resist polyester bar code label that will resist paint. These unique labels feature a special laminate that resists multiple paint applications, grease, even graffiti, and can withstand temperatures up to 250°F. After painting, customers simply pick off the paint and they are left with a clean, easy-to-scan polyester bar code label.
Subsurface printing protects against extreme caustics and moderate abrasion so you can have these pre-printed with serial numbers, date coding, or branding information.

Choose custom spot colors for the same price as standard colors! Flood coating or just having your logo in color can continue to add brand awareness to your product along with tracking as the items move through production phases.

Applications include transmission rebuilding companies, electric motor manufacturers, warehouse rack refurbishing, automotive parts, HVAC equipment tracking, and many more. If your product needs to be tracked and is going to be either painted or will get greasy and dirty, this is the perfect label for your application. Just pick the paint off or wipe the grease off and read the numbers or scan the barcode. Any industrial or dirty environment is the perfect home for this resistant surface label.

For one-time paint applications try our Removable Paint-Mask Polyester Bar Code Labels. These paint mask labels have a removable clear poly film over the label. Apply the label and read the barcode, then paint the product, label and all. When you want to read the label again in another stage of production, just peal off the tab to remove the top layer of the label and you will reveal a clean, unpainted barcode label below ready for a clean scan.

Take a look at our updated category for barcode scanners. We have added more then 400 new barcode readers to this category and these scanners are priced to move. Adazon has full line access to more brands and more models allowing our customers the greatest selection of product on the web. Brands ranging from Honeywell, Motorola, Datalogic, Opticon, Intermec, Metrologic, POS-X, Wasp, and more.

These barcode scanners are great for use in many different industries. In the healthcare industry, we have scanners used for patient verification, medication management, and pharmacy dispensing.

In transportation, scanners are used in parts rooms, route verification, bill of lading tracking and more. As freight moves within this industry it is critical to know exactly where the inventory for each shipment is located.

The airline industry utilized the barcode scanner to track packages, luggage, and passengers. It is very critical that all of these make each and every check point in the system for security reasons as well as on time delivery.

Retail is probably the most visible use of barcode scanners as they can be seen in any retail store on checkout these days. This is the automated way to check customers out, track inventory, and perform audits.

Manufacturing utilizes these barcode scanners in industrial environments and require the most durable equipment. Tracking “Work In Process” to help reduce the amount of on hand inventory helps make manufacturers more productive.

Warehousing locations use barcode scanners for receiving, stocking, cycle counting, picking, shipping, and billing inventories throughout the system. This helps remove any human error in keystroking.

Over the last eight years of reading this blog, we have learned a lot about the direct thermal label business, but have you thought about how using these direct thermal labels can help make for a greener environment? As we have learned over the years, direct thermal labels do not use a ribbon where thermal transfer labels must use a ribbon to create the image. This is because the direct thermal label material reacts to the heat from the print head to create the image. Because the paper reacts to the heat of the print head, the labels traditionally have not held up to any durability testing.

Scratching, exposure to sun light, exposure to heat, and chemicals can all cause the image to fade or become unreadable. Some of these elements have been muted a bit by adding a coating to the direct thermal labels that extends the life and prevents rapid fading. By using these newer substrates, the market for direct thermal material has expanded. The labels will still fade or yellow over time, but it is an extended amount of time now allowing the labels to have more uses.
So in today’s world of reduced carbon footprints it has become very important for organizations to reduce their waste. In fact, many organizations have used the reduction in waste and the ability to lower their carbon footprint as a competitive advantage.

Well, by using direct thermal labels a company can reduce the use of thermal transfer ribbon. This printer ribbon uses a poly based backing made in part from crude oil products. By eliminating the use of the thermal transfer ribbon companies can positively impact a company’s goal for a reduced carbon footprint. When using thermal transfer labels, the used ribbon and the cores must be disposed of, which adds to the company’s overall waste. Direct thermal technology eliminates this waste.

As the advances in direct thermal materials continue to expand the potential use applications also expand allowing for more of this elimination of waste to continue to make a positive impact. Currently there are still advantages and disadvantages to using direct thermal labels. Here are some of the advantages:

Simplified operator intervention, no ribbon to load or ribbon adjustments to make.

No ribbon wrinkle problems

No mechanical failures associated with ribbon drive mechanisms

Fewer inventory items due to lack of ribbon and fewer spare parts

Eliminates potential for mismatched labels and ribbon

No ribbon disposal.

Along with the advantages are some remaining disadvantages included below:

Typically slower print speeds

Typically reduced thermal print head life

The will fade or turn yellow over an extended period of time

The label will darken when exposed to extreme heat or direct sunlight

Specialty substrates like films can be costly

Limited selection of substrates

Limited chemical resistance

So you can see some of the inherent issues with direct thermal labels still exist but they are being pushed to the extreme end of the scale allowing for new applications to emerge.

Just to be clear, moving to direct thermal does not necessarily mean saving money on the product cost. Direct thermal labels typically cost a little more than the counterpart thermal transfer label. The primary savings will be in the cost of waste.

As you explore whether direct thermal is the correct choice for your labels, be sure to contact our label experts to thoroughly walk through your application making sure this is the right fit for your label printing needs.

Grainger, like many industrial distributors, require their suppliers to put special labels on their products so the product will get into the distribution system without a hitch. Many suppliers to distributors may not have the ability to make barcodes in house. This is where we come in. Adazon specializes in preprinted barcode labels and also in setting suppliers up to print their own barcode labels. The key is to understand the Grainger barcode required.

Grainger requires a special symbology. The symbology is the version of barcode that is printed and read. The Grainger barcode is alpha and numeric and there are only a few symbologies that work with both. The 3 of 9 code is also known as the code 39 meets these requirements. The code 128A is also an alpha numeric code and acceptable to Grainger.

The process of barcoding a Grainger item begins with the Grainger New Item Addition Process where the supplier is provided a Grainger Stock Number. This stock number can have a master pack quantity, and ship pack quantity, and a sell pack quantity. These are key elements in understanding the correct barcode needed. I like to think of it as a case of beer, a six pack, and a can. If it can be sold as any of the three, then it needs a barcode.

Many suppliers can integrate the barcode right into the packaging, but if this packaging goes to many other distributors as well, then a specific label is more desirable so there is no confusion as to which barcode is for which system or customer. Specific labels for each customer is then desired so as the product is made or picked for the order, the barcode labels can be put right on the product at that moment.

For suppliers that wish to print in house, there is a specific barcode printing system designed as a cost efficient package to perform this activity in house. Most suppliers do not want to dedicate the manpower to printing labels, so they outsource the label printing to us.

The package includes a desktop printer, software, ribbon, and labels all in one order. We can continue to make and sell the blank stock used in the printer on an ongoing basis.

If the labels are ordered, we can usually print them within a day or two and ship them to you already approved by Grainger and ready to just stick on the package and ship right out. If product is sold in a master pack, sell pack, and ship pack, then there will be a total of three labels for every SKU (stock keeping unit). In the beer example, there would be a sell pack that would have (1) Can, a ship pack (6) Pack, and a master pack (24) Case. The numbers indicate how many are inside.

It is always great news to find out that you have been selected as a Grainger supplier, but getting through the details of having your items set up in their system can be overwhelming. That is where we come in. We can help with all of this to get your product labeling approved and through their system.

The most effective manor when starting out is to order batches of 1000 sell pack labels with the appropriate master and ship pack labels if applicable, and have them on rolls by the shipping station. Because it is hard to know what the demand will be, having a quantity on hand will allow the flexibility to pull what you need from the roll and apply them as they order.

Instead of guessing what the sales will be, this process of ordering labels on a roll by the thousand has proven successful as the program gets rolling. As the demand builds, suppliers either order larger quantities of preprinted labels or order a printer with blank labels to print them on demand in house. Either way, we are here to help. Just give us a call on any of your Grainger label needs. We have helped thousands of Grainger suppliers and look forward to helping you.

What are custom digital labels? They are labels printed on digital machines like the HP Indigo Digital printing presses, model ws4500 and the HP Indigo ws6000. Other digital options include the large scale Xeikon 3050, and some smaller scale Primera CX1200 and the complete 2 stage AXXIS by Allen Datagraph. Customers can now design the most intricate high quality labels, knowing that these presses guarantee:

Color consistency from the first label to last
Perfect ink to ink trapping
Enormous flexibility
Variable printing
Zero dot gain
175 to 200 line screen
Cost effective small quantity runs
No printing plates or film required
Perfect registration
And with the Dieless Label Finisher there is no need for expensive dies for unique shapes.

Benefits of using digital printing include:

Shorter Lead Times: With no plates to create and very short press set-up times. Digital labels can be printed with lead times that are not possible on a conventional press.

Lower Cost: Short to medium sized runs become much less expensive because with digital printing, set up and preparation costs don’t exist.

Reduced Inventory: With less need to order larger quantities of printed products, customers can reduce inventories of custom printed materials, decreasing inventory carrying costs and helping to provide a JIT (Just in Time) inventory system.

Digital technology allows for:

Test Marketing: Quick production/introduction of short runs of high quality labels

Regional or Seasonal Labeling: Variety of labels in shorter runs appeal to regional testes or seasonal appropriateness

Printing Multiple SKU’s: Multiple labeling versions are readily available at low costs with no plates to create and very short press set-up times. Digital labels can be printed with lead times that are not possible on a conventional press.

Digital label printing offers a low cost alternative to conventional flexographic printing for short to medium sized production runs.

Lots of SKUs? Burdened by having to order minimums? Buying set after set of printing plates? If you’re private labeling, then digital printing is the cost effective solution for you to order only what you need by SKU, eliminate plate costs and get faster delivery.

The substrates that can be used in digital printing include Semi-gloss Material, Films, Paper, Foils, Clear, White, Synthetics, and Polypropylene. These presses also allow for multi-color digital labels, variable data printing, perfect registration, hot stamp, cold foil, UV, laminate, die cut, 4 color process, reverse print stations, consecutive numbering, imprintable UV, opaque white ink for the “no label look” on product, and metallic substrates.

As medical cannabis is expanding throughout the country there is a growing demand for these custom medicinal cannabis labels for packaging. Labeling is very important on this product due to the tamper proof element and warning for children and pets. Making sure you work with a reputable label manufacturer that both designs and stocks the labels can provide a seamless label ordering process.

The need for friendly and knowledgeable customer service personnel is critical to making label changes easy and for coming up with best in class application solutions that can be beneficial for cost savings and productivity enhancements.

The displayed medical cannabis label shows the result of working with a customer to refine a label from a front and back label to one label that folds over to seal the package and shows all the information needed on both sides of the packaging. By coming up with this innovative solution, the customer saved on cost due to two labels being reduced down to one label with all the warning and compliance information on one, and the benefit of a tamper seal in one medical cannabis label. The customer also saves in productivity by only having to attach one label to the product instead of one on the front and one on the back.

This customer experience has provided one of the easiest ways to create a label for the most common packaging. By having a fold over label that seals a bag in one motion, in stock and ready to ship, has proven invaluable. Medicinal marijuana should also be labeled with the compliant number and warnings for your area. Having these labels in stock saves in design costs, plate costs, die costs, and production run lead times, which can be up to 7 to 10 business days. In a growing market like this, time is critical and having to wait on label production times can be lost sales or lost image for your packaging needs.

With the busy schedules of the medicinal cannabis markets, and RX stores, we also have an automatic shipment plan available that provides a worry free label supply. A quantity is agreed on as a monthly order and we put that quantity in our system to automatically ship every month without the store owner having to remember. You cannot imagine all the panicked calls we get when a customer runs out of labels. This service has been found to be very valuable to peace of mind management of medical cannabis labels.

Modifying the label art for specific names, brands, and store locations is very easy and a value some suppliers have looked for. Our associate’s response within 24 hours on any request provides a positive business experience and enhances the customer’s professional branding.

We realize medicinal cannabis locations are very busy and the last thing they need to worry about are the labels needed for their product. That is why Adazon is the right solution for a worry free supply of medical cannabis labels.
