The P4T is the world’s very first thermal transfer printer that is mobile. Thermal transfer is a term used for printers that thermally transfer wax or resin from a ribbon onto a label. So with all this information, what is an actual application we have used these printers for? We proposed using mobile printers to allow printing on demand, but the mobile printers at the time only produced direct thermal labels which do not use a ribbon and they fade. Then along came the P4T, allowing thermal transfer printing on the road. For just over $1000.00 per unit, the printer more than paid for itself in discarded labels.

Each sales person now has a P4T printer in their vehicle. They can bring the printer into the tool crib, parts room, or manufacturing setting and as they see labels that need to be replaced, they call them up from the system memory and print the single label needed.

AXXIS is an Allen Datagraph iTech product. Allen Datagraph has been in the business for many years and is known for they technological advances in American Made digital label die cutting and printing.

Scratching, exposure to sun light, exposure to heat, and chemicals can all cause the image to fade or become unreadable. Some of these elements have been muted a bit by adding a coating to the direct thermal labels that extends the life and prevents rapid fading. By using these newer substrates, the market for direct thermal material has expanded. The labels will still fade or yellow over time, but it is an extended amount of time now allowing the labels to have more uses.
So in today’s world of reduced carbon footprints it has become very important for organizations to reduce their waste. In fact, many organizations have used the reduction in waste and the ability to lower their carbon footprint as a competitive advantage.

Well, by using direct thermal labels a company can reduce the use of thermal transfer ribbon. This printer ribbon uses a poly based backing made in part from crude oil products. By eliminating the use of the thermal transfer ribbon companies can positively impact a company’s goal for a reduced carbon footprint. When using thermal transfer labels, the used ribbon and the cores must be disposed of, which adds to the company’s overall waste. Direct thermal technology eliminates this waste.

As the advances in direct thermal materials continue to expand the potential use applications also expand allowing for more of this elimination of waste to continue to make a positive impact. Currently there are still advantages and disadvantages to using direct thermal labels. Here are some of the advantages:

• Simplified operator intervention, no ribbon to load or ribbon adjustments to make.
• No ribbon wrinkle problems
• No mechanical failures associated with ribbon drive mechanisms
• Fewer inventory items due to lack of ribbon and fewer spare parts
• Eliminates potential for mismatched labels and ribbon
• No ribbon disposal.

Along with the advantages are some remaining disadvantages included below:

• Typically slower print speeds
• Typically reduced thermal print head life
• The will fade or turn yellow over an extended period of time
• The label will darken when exposed to extreme heat or direct sunlight
• Specialty substrates like films can be costly
• Limited selection of substrates
• Limited chemical resistance

So you can see some of the inherent issues with direct thermal labels still exist but they are being pushed to the extreme end of the scale allowing for new applications to emerge.

Just to be clear, moving to direct thermal does not necessarily mean saving money on the product cost. Direct thermal labels typically cost a little more than the counterpart thermal transfer label. The primary savings will be in the cost of waste.

Grainger requires a special symbology. The symbology is the version of barcode that is printed and read. The Grainger barcode is alpha and numeric and there are only a few symbologies that work with both. The 3 of 9 code is also known as the code 39 meets these requirements. The code 128A is also an alpha numeric code and acceptable to Grainger.

The process of barcoding a Grainger item begins with the Grainger New Item Addition Process where the supplier is provided a Grainger Stock Number. This stock number can have a master pack quantity, and ship pack quantity, and a sell pack quantity. These are key elements in understanding the correct barcode needed. I like to think of it as a case of beer, a six pack, and a can. If it can be sold as any of the three, then it needs a barcode.

Many suppliers can integrate the barcode right into the packaging, but if this packaging goes to many other distributors as well, then a specific label is more desirable so there is no confusion as to which barcode is for which system or customer.  Specific labels for each customer is then desired so as the product is made or picked for the order, the barcode labels can be put right on the product at that moment.

For suppliers that wish to print in house, there is a specific barcode printing system designed as a cost efficient package to perform this activity in house. Most suppliers do not want to dedicate the manpower to printing labels, so they outsource the label printing to us.

The package includes a desktop printer, software, ribbon, and labels all in one order. We can continue to make and sell the blank stock used in the printer on an ongoing basis. 

If the labels are ordered, we can usually print them within a day or two and ship them to you already approved by Grainger and ready to just stick on the package and ship right out. If product is sold in a master pack, sell pack, and ship pack, then there will be a total of three labels for every SKU (stock keeping unit).  In the beer example, there would be a sell pack that would have (1) Can, a ship pack (6) Pack, and a master pack (24) Case. The numbers indicate how many are inside.
