Prescriptions Go Electronic With The Barcode

Today in Scotland, the electronic Acute Medication Service (eAMS) became active, allowing prescription for medications to be directly transmitted using barcode labels, reducing the risk of human error as well as cutting down on resources.

Although patients will still receive paper prescriptions from their Doctors, these prescriptions will contain a unique barcode that any pharmacist will be able to scan to bring up the necessary amounts of medicine. These barcodes will also contain basic patient information too, such as address, name, gender etc.

With over a million prescriptions written every week, eAMS should help lighten the load, and help correct the human error element that has plagued the Pharmaceutical industry.

Over 99% of surgeries are directly linked to Pharmacies in Scotland, and 90% of prescriptions are already being submitted electronically. The goal of the eAMS is provide the highest level of service possible to patients, and to improve overall efficiency. The eAMS also uses universal barcode labels for their medicine, allowing full compatibility.

Hopefully soon around the world countries will begin to undertake similar overhauls on their Pharmaceutical  systems for optimal efficiency.
