Many types of food, beverage and pantry items come with familiar nutrition labels that list facts such as serving size and calorie count. But one type of beverage that is usually without a nutritional label is beer or wine. What is that, and should you have a nutritional label for your beer or wine?nutrition fact label

The lack of a nutritional label for alcoholic beverages originates in the repeal of the Prohibition Act in 1935, which put booze under a different regulatory agency than the Food and Drug Administration. That’s why alcoholic beverages for the most part are exempt from the FDA’s laws that require a nutritional label for most products made for consumption. And though there have been moments where people have requested the laws to be changed to include alcohol, it hasn’t happened yet.

But, many people would appreciate some sort of ingredients or nutrition facts list for beer or wine. Knowing the calories in a particular beer, the gluten content of a beer, the ABV content, or the sugar content in a wine can help consumers choose your product over all others. These things are easy to incorporate in a beer or wine label, without distracting from the design or other components of the label.

So, even if you don’t have a nutritional label in mind for your alcoholic brew, it can be appealing to consumers if you included some facts on your product label. To receive help in designing a great product label for your beer or wine, contact us.
