Do you know about 2D barcodes?

2D What is this? As you might know it is “two dimensional” and these barcodes contain more information than conventional one dimensional barcodes. Conventional barcodes get wider, especially if they are a code 39 or one of the longer string barcodes, as more data is encoded. The two dimensional barcodes utilize a  vertical dimension and this allows for more data to be packed into the code.  When creating a 2D barcode there is data encoded into the image that runs horizontal and runs vertical in direction.  When more data is encoded into the content, the size of the barcode image can be increased in both the horizontal and vertical directions which maintains a decent size shape for easy scanning.  The PDF417 symbology, developed by Symbol Technologies, shows the latest development of trying to pack the largest amount of data in a very small space. Since the PDF417 was established it has become one of the fastest growing standards of 2D symbologies in the industry today.

Do you think 2D barcodes replace conventional 1D barcodes?

They will not! These two barcode formats will co-exist. The 2D barcode is perfect for uses where 1D barcodes cannot contain the necessary data needed.  A 1D barcode is very limited in the data it can hold.  Perfect uses for the 1D barcodes include applications like tracking numbers as you can see by this UPS label or serial numbers used on many products . Look at the label pictured here and you can see the 2D barcode used along with the standard 1D barcode.2D barcode comparison

Where is the 2D barcode being used?

The 2D barcode configuration is currently the a very popular format for state department of motor vehicles. They are doing this in the fraud detection and name of age verification processes. Real Estate companies, convenience stores, hospitals, airports, and federal buildings use 2D barcode technology.

How is a 2D barcode made?

The 2D barcode is a symbology and they are not that new, but they do need special barcode generation software. Adazon Inc. recommends using Bartender software which can be found speaking to a sales representative at 847-235-2700.

Will my regular scanner scan 2D barcodes?

No, you must use a special 2D scanner. These scanners are also called imagers and will interpret the 2D image into the data it contains.

Yes, Both Technologies are existing. Usually on amazon product listing these Barcodes are used. I saw this software. I think its best to use this if you are using 2D barcodes. But you must use 2D barcode scanner to read its data. because, its complicated and can’t be read by the 1D barcode scanner.

    Thanks for sharing.
