Getting creative with barcode labels is all part of the business: for many, adding a logo, a splash of color, or even a telephone number, can be an important part in creating a visually appealing and informative package, or in organizing inventory. But while your designs can be as creative as you want, it’s important to remember the quiet zones.quiet zone barcode labels

What are the quiet zones? These areas are important blank spaces or margins at both ends of the barcode that should be clear of text, graphics, and other markings. This empty space tells the scanner where the barcode starts and stops, and makes it possible for it to pick up the right information.

When your barcode fails to scan due to disrupted quiet zones, it can become a hassle for the person scanning it, further causing errors. Think about a cashier at the register, scanning a large number of products for a customer. When one barcode does not scan properly, the cashier might have to find the same product with a readable barcode, or manually type it in, wasting time for the customer and him or herself. Or, think about a fellow employee trying to maintain accurate inventory records: if a number of your items do not scan, then it can cause a backlog in work, or even errors in your inventory numbers. It might not matter when it’s just one item, but when scanning even tens or hundreds of items, you can easily have a big tracking problem.

The best way to make sure your design does not fail the quiet zone test is to use the width of a #2 pencil. If you can see white on the sides of the pencil, your barcode should read properly. if you don’t see any white space, it’s time to redesign your label, or print it on a bigger label to allow wider margins.
