Food labels are one of the most versatile and complicated label types subject to compliance with strict government regulations and standards. Such aspects as applied materials, information content and performance characteristics, including, temperature, moisture and damage resistance, must be taken into account in order to create food labels conforming to the product purpose and requirements. When developing food labels a producer should find a way to combine the following parameters:

-          Attractive design according to the nature of a product. Food labels are an essential component of a product directly communicating with the customers. Shapes, colors, images and other typographic elements transmit non-verbal information which may inspire trust or cause subconscious repulsion. When it comes to food labels design it is always advisable to recur to professional assistance in order to ensure product popularity in the future;

-          Proper material. Properties of the material selected for particular food labels should correspond to their transportation and storage conditions. This is important in order to both maintain the marketable appearance and meet the applicable regulatory requirements of food products. Whatever the product type food labels must be safe for health and environment;

-          Adequate pricing. Food labels may be pre-printed or customs. Pre-printed food labels bear a uniform neutral design corresponding to a particular product type. Pre-printed food labels are a simple and economical solution generally used for everyday consumption food products. Premium class and exclusive products require more costly custom food labels with a unique design and elaborate printing features such as foil stamping, lamination, protection film, holograms, etc.

-          Corresponding content. According to law existing in most countries information provided on food labels must include manufacturer details, full product name, product content, nutrition facts, production and expiration dates, application rules, consumption, storage and disposal recommendation. The producer may add other facts, emphasize certain parts of information or make them look irrelevant using different text colors and fonts at his own discretion.

Food labels are classified by the applied materials. The most common types of food labels are:

  • Glue-applied paper labels
  • Self-adhesive paper labels
  • Self-adhesive polymer labels

Depending on a glue type, self-adhesive food labels may be detachable and non-detachable. According to their location on a product there may be frontal, side and additional food labels. Also, particular types of food products such as bottles are produced with heat shrinkable labels. Made from flexible polymer film, heat shrinkable (shrink-sleeve) bottle labels cover the product almost entirely serving both as a marking and a seal. Soft drinks and other beverages are the most common bottled products featuring shrink sleeve bottle labels. Apart from the shrink-sleeve bottle labels, other common types of labels are used for bottled products. Thus, alcohol drinks typically come with glue-applied labels printed by the flexography or offset printing methods. Bottle labels also fall into different types according to the application spot and purpose:

Frontal bottle labels

which contains the name, logo and other key information about the beverage;

Shoulder bottle labels

Shoulder Bottle Labels are usually located directly above the frontal one;

Back Bottle Labels

Back Bottle Labels are the bottle labels placed on the back of a bottle containing information on the beverage producer and content;

Collar Bottle labels

Collar Bottle labels are the bottle label applied around the bottle neck.

High-quality bottle labels used for expensive alcoholic beverages usually feature protection elements against imitations. Such details as barcodes, holographic images, security stickers and other elements, difficult to replicate, protect beverages from adulteration.
